It seem difficult...
The age old argument
The most common reaction when people find out that I am exclusively using Linux. Have they used windows? :P
I work at a higher vocational school, teaching game programming and therefore I meet a lot of people starting their path into game development. The game industry is probably among the most proprietary branch of the tech-world, at least it's by far the most proprietary and locked business I've been part of.
I've worked in many different parts of the IT industry for 20 years. Working with everything from backend server programming and databases, to programming web banners in javascript, doing low level networking and AT commands, phone development and games. And even though every game is heavily dependent on open source, (yes I feel pretty secure making that assumption).
I think I needed to get some of that context out of the way. But what's on my mind is the other day when I heard this argument: "it seem so difficult to get into".
It is not the first time I hear it. I would go so far as to say that it is by far the most common reaction I have. And anyone that have actively used Linux probably know the feeling. By actively I mean someone that have been curious enough to take the time to install and tried out Linux, not just borrowed a computer running Linux.
So, the other day one of the student project groups had a planning session, but the didn't have a laptop to collaborate, so I lent them mine. I explained that it might be some things which works differently since it's my private computer. They used it without any problem and after we exchanged some words and the person who had actually used the computer. (
